Introduction - Migration Policy in Ireland
The object of this blog is to highlight and discuss the primary topics of debate in the area of Irish migration and visa policy.
Over the coming months I intend to raise some of the key issues with the intention of creating a dialog and discussion place for the reform agenda.
In my view, Ireland needs to establish a more efficient, simplistic and policy driven immigration system to replace the historic emphasis on labour intensive procedures, assumption of good faith and discretionary decision making.
I intend to explore issues such as;
- Ireland and Schengen
- International Transit in Dublin Airport
- The Common Travel Area between Ireland and the UK
- Visa Issues at Irish Embassies Abroad
- US - Pre Flight Clearance in Dublin and Shannon
- Immigration control at Irish Ports and Harbors
- Customs Enforcement in Ireland
- Refugee and Asylum Policy in Ireland
I welcome your commentary and suggestions as well as feed back on topics for discussion.

While much work has been done in terms of new legislation which seeks to deal with migration issues in Ireland, I believe a task that needs to be undertaken is the gathering of hard and systematic data on the true extent to which Ireland's employment and immigration laws are actually enforced. While recent policy measures certainly suggest that illegal immigration is being tackled by the Irish government - the figures pertaining to the effectiveness and implementation of these policies is scant.
ReplyDeleteLegislation is all well and good but the next step must be establishing whether it has truly been useful in achieving the government's aims.
We have statistics relating to for example, convictions of employers who have violated employment regulations and also relating to the number of deportations in recent years but a direct correlation must be drawn (with the help of more detailed information) between legislation and current trends.
